How managers are selected and analysed
One framework, six fields, applied identically to every profile on this site. This page explains the terms so that the manager index can be read consistently.
1. Selection
The pool is intentionally small: five managers. A short list allows each profile to be written at length and compared field by field, which is the point of the site. Selection is editorial and is based on three considerations.
- Tactical distinctiveness — the manager represents a clearly identifiable model rather than a general approach.
- Analytical contrast — the pool as a whole covers different solutions to the same problems, from control to pressure to adaptation.
- Discussion value — the model is one that other coaches and readers routinely reference when describing modern football.
Four of the five managers in the current pool are Spanish and one is Italian. That balance is a reflection of the tactical contrast the pool is meant to produce, not a claim about national superiority.
2. The six-field framework
Every manager entry uses the same fields, in the same order. Open a definition below.
The manager's core system and the patterns that recur across their teams. This field describes mechanisms — how the ball is progressed, where numbers are created, how the shape is set — rather than isolated moments. See it worked through in the tactic notes.
The areas where the manager consistently adds value. Strengths are categories of influence, not scores. They are never ranked against another manager's strengths, because the fields describe different kinds of contribution. Read the strengths module.
The overall football identity of the team — the tone a viewer recognises across different line-ups. Where the snapshot includes a qualifier such as "sometimes rigid", we publish it unchanged. Compare the five style identities.
How the team builds, progresses and creates. This field is assembled only from the possession-facing items already present in the tactical approach; nothing is added from outside the snapshot. See the phase breakdown.
How the team presses, blocks or defends. Where the snapshot does not describe a defensive mechanism, we state that openly rather than inventing one. An empty field is more useful than a fabricated one. Read the pressing note.
An editorial weighting based on relevance, influence and tactical impact within this pool. It is a reading priority, not a performance rating, and it carries no predictive meaning of any kind. See a spotlight panel in use.
3. The editorial labels
Short labels appear on cards and in the comparison rail. They are descriptive shorthand for the framework above.
- Elite tactician — the model is highly developed and widely referenced.
- High-control coach — the approach is organised around controlling the state of the game.
- System builder — the approach is built on repeatable, teachable structure.
- Pressing specialist — defensive pressure is the organising principle of the model.
- Transition expert — the moments after a change of possession are central to the plan.
- Flexible manager — the structure is designed to change according to squad and game state.
We deliberately avoid competitive language. No manager on this site is described as a "favourite", because the fixed snapshot contains no such claim and this is not a prediction site.
4. Limits of the analysis
Transparency about what this framework cannot do is part of the framework itself.
- All content is generated from one fixed snapshot held inside this website. Nothing is fetched live.
- No clubs, competitions, results, tables or fixtures are referenced anywhere on the site.
- No injuries, line-ups, transfers, odds, probabilities, weather, attendance or ticket information is published.
- No future outcome is projected. Spotlight level is an editorial reading weight only.
- Diagrams are abstract illustrations of concepts, not tracking, event or match data.
